So I headed over to MTV.com reluctantly to see what all of the The Hills fuss was about, and began watching a season three episode online. Needless to say, I was annoyed, and had to stop watching immediately as not to fry any additional brain cells. I’m glad I did though, because I was pleasantly interrupted by commercial breaks advertising MTV’s “Fashion: The Life”, A Pepsi sponsored web reality show following three-get this-emerging fashion designers of color, “as they take their clothing collections to the biggest fashion show and marketplace in the world; the MAGIC convention in Las Vegas”.
So you see, my curiosity paid off. The roughly 5-minute show is fabulous, and surely fills my Project Runway void as its kind of edgier, rawer, and street-wise little sister. The first designer is Luam of Wild Child Nation. She’s a 29 year old choreographer turned fashion designer whose eclectic style finds inspiration from the 80s, Kanya West, and dance, among others. Pictured above is Luam (right), and her accomplices.
Next there’s Steve Aoki also 29 from LA, who is a DJ and runs his own record label. Steve’s line is called Dim Mak (which is apparently sold out at the moment). His influences include graffiti, people, gambling, being on a boat, and “window seat business class”.
Last but certainly not least, you will find narrator Danny Shaw, 30, from Brooklyn, who has been in the clothing business since 1992 and already landed a gig as a designer for Pepsi Style. I just love how all of these designers are so multi talented and entrepreneurial–poster children for HUES? Indeed. I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of any of these designers, especially with all of the ridiculous amounts of fresh talent. You can catch up on all three designers right now at The Look Right Now.

Oh, Steve Oaki is also a popular DJ out here in LA. I like his style, too. Gotta check this out.
